IGI vs GIA certification for lab-grown diamonds: reading the report
Quality Assurance · 2026-07-14
Both laboratories grade lab-grown stones — but the reports differ in language and layout. A line-by-line guide for your sales team.
The four lines that matter
Growth method, colour, clarity and cut finish. Everything else on the report supports those four lines. Train your counter staff to point to them in order and the certificate becomes a selling aid rather than paperwork.
Grading language
IGI states colour and clarity on the same scale used for natural stones; GIA reports lab-grown with the same grades but different report styling. Neither is "stricter" in a way that changes what your customer sees in the stone.
When we recommend which
For melee-heavy pavé work we supply parcel-level documentation; for centre stones above 0.30 ct we default to IGI, with GIA or SGL available on request per order.
